Burnt Scroll Plaque

Somewhere in all my blog hopping, I saw this scripture/word art on a plaque on someone's mantle and loved it.  I wish I could find it again so I could link to it.  It was darling.  If it was your blog or you know the blog I am talking about, please tell me so I can link to it.  

I whipped up a copy of it in Photoshop and added an antique looking background.  I used my printer to print it.  I rolled it up scroll style and burned the edges.  I unfolded it and then folded the corners in to look like an old scroll.

For the board, I used some bead board.  The size is 12x12.  I pained it black and distressed the edges and the middle sections to highlight them. 

I had some wheat laying around so I took 5 pieces, put 2 on one side, 3 on the other and tied them together with raffia.  

I had some wood beads my kids use for making bracelets and necklaces and tied them onto the raffia.

I tacked the print onto the center with a few dabs of hot glue so the edges could remain curled. I had to tack the hanging raffia to the sides at the top (under the wheat) so it would hang down the sides.

If I had had some jute or burlap laying around, I am sure I would have incorporated it in there somehow.  What do you think?

Count your blessing subway art/Free printable

I have been wanting to try my hand at subway art and here is my first attempt.  Not bad eh?

Since I wanted one to hang on my wall and be inspiring to anyone who saw it, I thought using the theme from one of my favorite songs would work really well.

If you are unfamiliar with this song, you can check out the words and music here.  I know that whenever I am feeling sorry for myself, I just have to hear or sing this song to be reminded not only of the many blessings I have, but also of the promises that come with remembering them.

I created many variations of this picture because I couldn't decide which one I liked best.  I will post 3 here so feel free to take them for yourself.  No requirements needed, but if you wanted to follow my blog and or my fanbook page, you would make me all sorts of grateful!  Just click on the picture once to bring up the image and then a second time to enlarge it.  These will make an 8x10.  I have mine in a frame, but they would look fabulous mod podged onto wood also.

Missionary Plaque

As an LDS mom, I have high hopes that my teenage son will make serving a full-time mission his highest priority.  I know it isn't easy making it through the teenage years and keeping clean and worthy to go on a mission when turning 19.  I am sure for a young man or woman, leaving their families for 2 years and going to a new place to teach the gospel to strangers is somewhat daunting, but also very exciting.  Any missionary you ask will be quick to tell you that these 2 years serving the Lord are the best 2 years of his/her life.  You can learn more about missionaries and what they do here.

From the first time I saw this saying about missionaries, I knew I wanted to do something with it.  I was so excited when I saw an idea where they personalized the saying similar to what I created above.  Being who I am, I wanted to make it myself.

My son is still young, but how neat is it that he can have this plaque to help him keep his sites on "the best 2 years of his life?"

I wanted it to look as close to a missionary tag as possible, but finding the exact font they use on the name tags seemed impossible.  I printed it off as a 5x7 and found just the right size piece of wood that looked just like a plaque.  After painting it black, I mod podged the picture onto the plaque.  My daughter helped me put it together and this is what she gave him for Christmas.  He LOVED it.  He found a spot on his wall right across from his bed to hang it.

 

Thanks for my readers picking out the typo here.  Maybe it will be worth BIG bucks someday as it will be one of a kind!  ;)

I think this could be fun for any past, present and/or future missionaries.  If you don't want a plaque, I am sure it would look just as nice in a black frame (and much easier).
